The U.S. flag at Elkins City Hall is at half mast in honor of Brigadier General Chuck Yeager, who died Monday at the age of 97.

In the course of an Air Force career that spanned from 1941 to 1975 and saw him rise through the ranks from private, he served with distinction as a fighter pilot during World War II and was the first pilot to break the sound barrier, in 1947.
