City Hall News: Week of March 14, 2022

Meeting this week are council’s Public Safety Committee, Finance Committee, and Personnel Committee, as well as the Elkins Historic Landmarks Commission and the Elkins Parks and Recreation Commission. Council meets Thursday.

The Public Safety Committee meets Monday at 10 a.m. On the agenda are a contract between the police department and GovTech, an application for a U.S. Department of Homeland Security grant, and an application for an RCDI grant.

The Finance Committee meets Monday at 1 p.m. The committee will continue work on the FY 2023 budget and consider recommendations from the Public Safety Committee concerning the DHS and RCDI grant applications. Also on the agenda are an application for an ARC Power Planning grant and the proposed creation of a fund for the fire department.

The Historic Landmarks Commission meets Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the Darden House (next to city hall). On the agenda are a letter of support for a Kump Education Center grant application, a Davis & Elkins College intern, and discussion of budget revision and other steps after the non-renewal of the commission’s lease on the Darden House.

The Personnel Committee meets in special session Wednesday at 9 a.m., after lack of a quorum forced postponement of last week’s regular meeting. On the agenda are holiday pay, longevity pay, and proposed changes to the compensation and classification plan. The committee will also consider reappointment of the city attorney to another one-year term and filling the position of supervisor of the sanitation department after the upcoming retirement of the current incumbent.

The Parks and Recreation Commission meets Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Phil Gainer Community Center. Agenda items include bleachers for the Elkins Babe Ruth League field, an upcoming vacancy on the commission, and the Phil Gainer Community Center kitchen rate.

Council meets Thursday at 7 p.m. This meeting’s agenda may be adjusted through Tuesday. Currently on the agenda are consideration of Finance Committee recommendations concerning the above grant applications and the final reading of an ordinance annexing the portion of the former International Order of Odd Fellows property recently purchased by the Randolph County Development Authority. Council will also consider the reappointment of Charles Preusch to the Elkins Water Board.

All meetings are open to the public and, unless otherwise stated, held at Elkins City Call (401 Davis Avenue). Find agendas and other meeting information here: www.cityofelkinswv.com/council-and-committee-meetings.
